Common Check Engine Light Problems We Can Fix at Our Katy, TX Auto Shop

14 July 2023

If your check engine light flashes on, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your engine is on the cusp of disaster. However, you’ll still want to get to the shop ASAP for computerized diagnostics so that the issue can be pinpointed and addressed before it gets worse and potentially leaves you stranded. At Auto Check Complete Car Care, our local mechanics provide expert check engine light repair in the greater Katy, TX area.

What is my check engine light on?

Problems with certain sensors can cause the check engine light to come on. A malfunctioning oxygen sensor can trigger the light and may also cause issues such as misfiring and rough idling. A bad mass airflow sensor can also cause the light to turn on. With a faulty MAF sensor, your engine might hesitate while accelerating.

Another common check engine light trigger is a failing catalytic converter. Because your catalytic converter plays a central role in preventing excessive pollution, it’s important that problems with it are quickly taken care of. A bad catalytic converter can cause poor acceleration, decreasing fuel-efficiency, and a smell like rotten eggs.

Faulty spark plugs are another potential reason your check engine light is on. Bad spark plugs can cause rough idling, trouble starting, weak acceleration, and engine misfiring. Ignition coil trouble can also trigger the light, and may also cause misfiring and worsening acceleration.

There are also some cases where the check engine light turns on just because of a loose gas cap. You’ll want to make sure your gas cap is tightly secured after each time you get gas. With a loose or missing gas cap, fuel may evaporate before your engine gets the chance to use it.

It’s also possible that a faulty battery is triggering your check engine light if it is causing low voltage at the computer. Typically, new car batteries should work dependably for at least three years after installation.
